Its a rebuilt short block with upgraded internals and cleaned out water passages. Which in my opinion, is better than brand new because the block has been "seasoned". Realistically, the $500 assembly price is not something your going to see unless you have already had all your machine work done. Chances are the block will need to be honed, rods and bearings will need to be fitted, etc etc. So in that case the "crate" option becomes the better deal. As far as shipping, there are several freight carriers (R+L) that will transport everything for waaaay less than commercial carriers like UPS, FedEx etc.
